Political War Before 2027? One Feared Dead, Journalists Attacked As NDC Alleges Police-Supervised Thuggery At Ohaa’s Enugu Campaign, Demands Answers
ENUGU, Nigeria — Tension erupted in Enugu State on Saturday after suspected political thugs allegedly attacked supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during the campaign flag-off of its governorship candidate, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, leaving several people injured and raising fears that one of the victims may have died.
The victim was identified as Nwolle Christopher, although conflicting accounts emerged over his condition as of Sunday. While some sources reportedly speculated that he had died, others maintained that he was still alive. His status had not been conclusively established at the time of reporting.
The alleged attacks reportedly occurred in two phases on Saturday, October 10, 2026, first at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu and later at Ohaa's campaign office in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of the state capital.
The NDC accused suspected political thugs of attacking its supporters and alleged that the assailants operated under the protection of police officers attached to the state government. These allegations had not been independently verified.
Airport Welcome Turns Violent
In a statement signed by Hon. Sampson Ukwu, media aide to Ohaa, the party said thousands of its members, supporters of the Obidient Movement and members of the Kwankwasiya group had gathered at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport to welcome the governorship candidate when violence allegedly broke out.
According to the party, airport security personnel denied the supporters entry, after which suspected thugs attacked them in the presence of police officers and other security operatives.
The NDC alleged that the attackers assaulted supporters, causing injuries to their heads and bodies, while several vehicles were reportedly damaged during the confrontation.
The party further accused police officers of firing tear gas and discharging gunshots at the scene, triggering panic among the crowd.
One of the party members, identified as Mr Moses Arisi, reportedly sustained serious head injuries, with blood gushing from his head.
A journalist with Signature TV was also allegedly attacked, pushed to the ground and dispossessed of his phone. Other journalists covering the event were reportedly assaulted.
The allegations have raised questions about the safety of political supporters and journalists covering campaign activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
However, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the identities of those responsible and the precise sequence of events, require an independent investigation.
Gunmen Allegedly Open Fire At Campaign Office
Despite the reported violence at the airport, NDC supporters subsequently moved in a large convoy to Ohaa's campaign office in GRA, Enugu, where another gathering was taking place.
The party described the turnout as overwhelming, saying that several of its candidates in Enugu State, deputy governorship candidate Hon. Omeje Frank, Prof. Ene Nwannaji and numerous supporters were present.
According to the NDC, gunmen subsequently invaded the venue and opened fire on those attending the gathering.
Three members of the Kwankwasiya group were identified as among those reportedly shot. They were named as Umar Abdulkarim, Muhammad Musa and Hassan Gora.
Another party member was reportedly shot and left lying in a pool of blood before being rushed to a hospital. The victim was subsequently identified by a source as Nwolle Christopher, whose condition remained uncertain.
Earlier accounts of the incident alleged that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, in a Toyota Highlander SUV and a minibus before firing sporadically to disrupt the gathering.
Security personnel attached to the campaign train reportedly pursued the assailants and recovered one of the motorcycles allegedly used in the operation, while other suspects escaped.
One party member was reportedly shot, while another sustained a machete wound.
The claims surrounding the shooting, the number of casualties and the identities of the attackers had yet to be independently confirmed.
NDC Raises Alarm Over Alleged Pattern Of Attacks
The latest incident comes shortly after another reported attack at Obuoffia, the country home of Ohaa, where gunmen allegedly invaded an NDC meeting and left several party members with gunshot injuries.
The party has expressed concern over what it described as repeated attempts to intimidate its members and disrupt its political activities in the state.
Although the NDC did not explicitly identify the All Progressives Congress (APC) as responsible for Saturday's attacks, it accused individuals it described as people in power of acting out of desperation and fear.
The party also alleged that the attackers enjoyed police protection.
No independent evidence had been presented in the supplied account to establish who ordered or sponsored the attacks, and the allegations should not be treated as proof of responsibility by any political party or government official.
The incidents nevertheless raise serious questions about political violence, the protection of opposition supporters and the ability of political parties to conduct lawful activities without intimidation.
'Nothing Will Stop Us From Going To Government House' — Omeje
Reacting to the violence, NDC deputy governorship candidate Omeje Frank said the reported attacks would not force the party to abandon its ambition of taking over the Enugu State Government House in 2027.
“No matter what they do, we shall go to the Lion Building (Government House) next year. Nothing will stop us,” he said.
His remarks underscored the party's determination to continue its political activities despite the reported incidents.
The NDC has maintained that it intends to pursue its campaign through lawful political engagement rather than allow the violence to derail its preparations for the next governorship election.
Ohaa Calls On Enugu Elders To Intervene
Later on Saturday, Ohaa addressed journalists at his residence, calling on elders and former governors of Enugu State to remind the incumbent administration of its responsibility to protect residents.
He described the reported attacks at the airport and his campaign office as evidence of what he characterised as fear among those in power.
“Today's attack at the airport and at our campaign office shows the level of desperation and fear in the camp of those in power. They are afraid of the people. They are afraid of the truth,” Ohaa said.
He added that the reported violence would not discourage the party from continuing its campaign.
“But no amount of violence will stop the will of Ndi Enugu. We will continue this journey peacefully, lawfully, and with even greater determination until victory is secured in 2027,” he said.
Ohaa had earlier used the campaign flag-off to explain his reasons for contesting the election, promising an issue-based campaign focused on the interests of Enugu residents.
“I am in this race on a clear and uncompromising mandate: to rescue Enugu State for Ndi Enugu through an issue-based campaign,” he said.
He added: “Governance must serve the people, not oppress them.”
The candidate also reaffirmed the party's commitment to its campaign agenda, declaring that its members would not be intimidated.
“The NDC remains resolute. This is a Rescue Mission for Ndi Enugu, and it will succeed,” he said.
Security Agencies Urged To Investigate
The NDC has called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant security agencies to investigate both incidents, identify and arrest those responsible, and establish whether anyone sponsored the attacks.
The party also demanded that anyone found culpable be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa and the NDC remain firmly committed to the MEGA agenda: Make Enugu Great Again. No amount of thuggery or intimidation will stop the march of the people,” the party said in its statement.
As of the time the report was published, SaharaReporters had not received a response from the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, SP Daniel Ndukwe. Calls to his mobile line and a message sent to the command's official account had reportedly gone unanswered.
The police had therefore not publicly responded to the allegations contained in the account.
Questions Authorities Must Answer
The reported attacks have placed several issues before the relevant authorities:
- Who carried out the attacks? An independent investigation is needed to establish the identities of the alleged assailants and determine whether they were acting alone or on anyone's instructions.
- What was the role of security personnel? Authorities must establish what happened at the airport and campaign office, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of tear gas and gunfire.
- What is Nwolle Christopher's condition? His status must be officially clarified amid conflicting reports about whether he survived the shooting.
- How many people were injured? Medical and police records could help establish the number of victims and the severity of their injuries.
- Were the attacks connected? Investigators should determine whether the airport confrontation, the shooting at the campaign office and the earlier reported attack at Obuoffia were linked.
- Will anyone be held accountable? A transparent investigation would help establish responsibility and reassure political parties and residents that violence will not be tolerated.
With the 2027 governorship election approaching, the reported incidents have renewed concerns about political security in Enugu State.
The immediate priority is to establish the victims' conditions, determine what happened at both locations and ensure that any person found responsible is held accountable under the law.
For the NDC, the challenge is to continue its political activities without exposing supporters to further danger. For the security agencies, the test is whether they can investigate the allegations impartially, protect all political groups and prevent further violence.
